Malabsorption is defined as a difficulty absorbing nutrients from food and should be considered a clinical condition and therefore not handled in the scope of our discipline. Our programs and literature relate to non-clinical sport performance, health and fitness. Many things, including, but not limited to, genetic abnormalities, enzyme deficiencies, surgeries and disease can cause malabsorption. Malabsorption is usually the inability to absorb certain sugars, fats, proteins, or vitamins from food. It can also involve a general malabsorption of food. Symptoms include muscle wasting, weakness (anemia), weight loss, bloating, gas, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal distresses. Supplementing the diet with essential nutrients that are unable to be absorbed in needed amounts is a common therapy but requires professional diagnosis. If you are dealing with a client with malabsorption make sure their medical professional is involved.
