Calcium supplements can be beneficial to almost everyone if their diet is not supplying ~1000-1200mgs/daily, which most diets do not. But for men it may be a bit trickier than “one size fits all.” Many top researchers now believe that, although for women, 1,200–1,500 mg of calcium daily doesn’t seem to have any downside, it may for men. Studies have hinted at a possible connection between calcium and prostate cancer, which is one reason Great Britain set its daily calcium recommendation at 700 mg. The US RDA for men ages 19-70 is 1000mgs/day and 1200mgs/day age 71 and older. We believe 700mgs of calcium along with ~1000ius of vitamin D for men up to age 70 is probably the safe answer for now. Calcium should almost never be taken alone. If your diet does not supply this amount, use a supplement as shown below.
Calcium, vitamin D and magnesium help improve the growth and development of healthy bones and maintain bone density. Most people do not get enough calcium and vitamin D, which can lead to osteoporosis, falls, fractures and increased risk of certain cancers. Calcium is relatively easy to get in food sources such as dairy products and a variety of calcium-fortified foods. Unfortunately many adults have shied away from dairy because of believing they are lactose intolerant. Some vegetables, such as spinach, are also relatively rich in calcium. Organic acids and fiber, however, can interfere with calcium absorption, so plant sources are not generally considered the easiest way to boost calcium intake. If you’re not meeting your daily requirements, it is recommended that you increase food sources or take a quality supplement. Also, supplement only 500mgs of calcium at a time because that’s about all the body can use effectively from one dose. Therefore, if your health professional tells you that you need to add 1000mgs/day of calcium in the form of a supplement, take calcium carbonate in two doses: 1 -500mgs tablet with a morning meal and 1 with an evening meal. Again, men should stick to ~700mgs/day total unless advised differently by a qualified physician.
